Fun Fact of the Week

In 1896, New York State increased the liquor tax and attempted to curb alcohol conception – especially in bars on Sunday. The “Raines Law”, as this legislation become known, only allowed restaurants to serve alcohol on Sundays. One bar exploited this loophole by serving a sandwich to every patron that ordered a drink. They would then take the sandwich back and provide it to the next bar customer. In some instances, the same sandwich was used for days or weeks. Obviously spoiled and inedible, this “Raines Sandwich” never the less served its purpose and allowed New Yorkers to enjoy an alcoholic beverage seven days a week.

Previous Week’s Fun Fact

Tempura was not invented by the Japanese.

It was a dish they observed Portuguese Missionaries making during Lent and other fasting periods. The Christian Church designated days of prayer, abstinence, and fasting during each of the four seasons of a year. In Latin, this is “quatuor tempora” (four times).

As the Japanese adopted this way of frying vegetables and seafood, they referred to it as “tempura”.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?

I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful that the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
